Les Dessous de Meursault, une visite culottée

A stroll through the large cellars of Meursault will allow you to discover the "underbelly" of the village: as early as the 11th century, the monks of Cîteaux settled in Meursault (21 Côte d'Or, Burgundy) where they harvested white mass wine, and where they built cellars and barns. It is in the park of the current Château de Cîteaux, that these buildings were constructed at the end of the 12th century with magnificent vaulted cellars that you will have the pleasure of admiring.
The Domaine Delagrange cellars will transport you back to the 15th century: they were already housing the wines of the Duchy of Burgundy at that time, and they have the particularity of being two storeys high, which is quite rare in the Côte-d'Or.
As for the Caves du Domaine Ropiteau, dating from the 15th and 17th centuries, located in Meursault in the former property of the Hospices de Beaune, they are among the most prestigious in the region, with 900 barrels being vinified in the cellars.
Finally, the Robert de Grancey Cellar - Meursault Town Hall: a former fortified castle built in 1337, where several scenes from the film "La Grande Vadrouille" with Bourvil and Louis de Funès were filmed (1966), is built on a beautiful 14th century cellar. The birth certificate of the building can also be found on one of the foundation stones.
